The Zanpakuto (Soul Slayer)
A Zanpakuto (soul slayer) is a weapon attributable to the Shinigami, the Arrancar and the Vizard. It comes in the form of a blade, which varies in it's types: katana, nodachi, murasame, masamune, kodachi, wakizashi, tanto, broadsword, etcetera. However, whilst sealed it always comes in the form of a single, average blade - although it's decoration varies (hilt color, design, etc).
A Shinigami has two releases, a Shikai (first release) and a Bankai (final release). Shikai is attained by just about everyone who has passed the academy, and to get it they are required to enter their inner world and find the name of their Zanpakuto. Once done, they are able to release it (the Shikai) with a cry (Byakuya's, for example, is "Scatter, Senbonzakura). When activated it has a specific power, be that from an elemental-type (water-and-ice, water, ice, fire, lightning, etcetera) or an affect type (illusions, mass affect, pheromone, hormonal, etc) to a motion type (like Renji's and Ikkaku's, it simply changes the blades appearance and melee abilities). The Bankai is the hardest to attain, and is a prequesite to becoming a Captain; it has been known for a few lieutenants to obtain it, but not many. The Bankai is extremely more powerful than the Shikai, and it usually is a more extravagent and powerful form of the Shikai, but sometimes is something completely different (it cannot go against the blade type; for instance if it is a fire-type, it's Bankai cannot create water, or use it).
Physical changes of a release are often evident but not always. For instance when a Shikai is released, the blade will gain it's abilities, but for some (mainly motion types) the blade will change entirely. Ikkaku's has transformed into a tri-section staff with a pole blade attached, whereas Shiba Kaien's was that of a trident, but this can happen for anyone. This usually involves the adding on of ribbons, or the lengthening of a blade.
A rare occurance in a Zanpakuto (requires ADMIN approval) is that when unsealed it forms itself into two blades, such as Captains Kyoraku and Ukitake's Zanpakutos, which when released into it's Shikai form become two blades instead of one.
A Vizard's blade acts exactly like the above, no difference.
An Arrancar's blade is similar to that of a Shinigami's, or Vizard's. When unsealed it must come in the form of a single blade, and is usually unique in decoration of the hilt, sometimes reflecting it's power or simply a glimpse of this power. However, the difference is that it has only one release, resurreccíon, instead of Shikai and Bankai. When they activate resurreccíon, they themselves will undergo a drastic physical change and power change, as well as unsealing their blades abilities (similar to the Shinigami's).
