The Arrancar
The Arrancar were all, previously, Hollows (unless created by the Orb of Distortion, see further down) who have managed; by sheer amounts of willpower, sheer power and in some cases intelligence, to remove their own mask and discard it. This grants them a large proportion of Shinigami powers, known as Shinigamification or Shinigami-ka.
The more powerful Arrancar will take on an appearance of humanoid descent, although many simply become a more powerful Hollow with a different form. Those who take on the humanoid form are able to store their excess power into the form of a Zanpakuto, similar to a Shinigami's; however Shikai and Bankai have been replaced with Resurreccíon.
Arrancar are higher-up in the hierarchy of Hueco Mundo than the Hollows, and are often seen in control of them; many having different positions.
Ranking System
The ranking system of the Arrancar is a descendant of the ranking system amongst the Shinigami, those who specialize in their abilities or combat; sheer power acting like a Captain, allowing them to take on a militaristic ordenance.
Numeros: The Numeros are the combat-efficient side of the Arrancar, superior in combat to all other Arrancar except for the Espada (see below). They are numbered 11 to 99, the number 11 being the oldest of the Numeros, the number 99 being the youngest. Though they have a distinct uniform (white-collared jacket and robes with a black sash) they are allowed to customise it, giving each a sense of uniquity.
Espada: The Espada are the 10 most powerful Arrancar within Hueco Mundo and Las Noches. Their power is un-matched amongst the Espada and the similarity to Shinigami is shown in the power difference of themselves and the Numeros: an Espada being similar to a Captain's strength, with the Numeros having a Lieutenant's strength in comparison. They are each given a number of 1 to 10, 1 being the strongest and 10 being the weakest in terms of their combat superiority. These numbers are tattooed on different parts of their bodies (in the anime, Grimmjow's is on his lower back).
Fraccion: The Fraccion are the subservient beings of the Espada, they are a subsection of the Numeros and work directly for a particular Espada. The number of Fraccion each Espada has varies, and each one tends to compliment the abilities of the Espada; in whichever area.
Privaron Espada: They are Arrancar who were previously Espada before Aizen began his Shinigami-ka using the Orb of Distortion, and were rendered obsolete by these new Arrancar who replaced them as the Espada. As such, each of these Privaron Espada were given a three-digit number, signifying their dominance over the Numeros in combat efficiency. They reside in Tres Cifras meaning Three Digits.
Exequias: The Exequias are the execution division of the Arrancar, charged with the destruction of rebels and intruders within Las Noches/Hueco Mundo.
Zanpakuto
The Zanpakuto (Soul Slayer) of an Arrancar is different to that of a Shinigami. It sacrifices the dual releases of a Shinigami's Zanpakuto for a singular release known as Resurreccíon, allowing them to make the Hollow side of their power dominant, coming in many different forms.
Once intoned they, alike the Shinigami, will gain a boost in power and temporal abilities from the power stored within their sword. For an Arrancar, this could mean the ability to manipulate fire, which is similar to how a fire-type Zanpakuto would work for a Shinigami; or it could personify their characteristics.
Personifying their characteristics causes the Hollow-bone material to cover their body, or certain parts, and bring across a transformation. For instance, "El Toro", the Bull, would give them a bullish appearing armor; granting them powers such as increased speed (charging) and strength. This varies greatly between Arrancar; some making no physical change at all, some making a huge physical change but no real power change.
